Data sovereignty

Data from Country belongs to Country

Drone photos, maps and AI results are information about Country. We look after them on behalf of the Traditional Owners and communities they belong to.

How we look after your data

A private data portal for every client

Each client has their own secure portal with their surveys, maps and deliverables. Only that client's access code opens it, and one client can never see another's data.

Traditional Owners own the data

Data collected on Country belongs to the Traditional Owners and community whose Country it is. They decide how it's used, stored and shared. We follow the CARE principles for Indigenous data governance:

  • Collective benefit: data should benefit the community.
  • Authority to control: the community decides.
  • Responsibility: we're accountable for how it's used.
  • Ethics: rights and wellbeing come first.

Cultural sites stay off shared outputs

We only map cultural sites with Traditional Owner permission, and only in the way they agree. Exact locations of sensitive sites are kept off any shared map, report or presentation: a general area, or nothing.

Every AI result is checked by a ranger

AI results are marked AI-generated until a ranger reviews them. Only ranger-reviewed results go into reports, maps or decisions, and every result can be traced back to its site, survey date, image and model version.

Optional

Long-term archive

For communities that want to keep survey data for the long term, so that maps can be compared year to year, we can set up an optional archive held on the community's behalf. Ask us about it when you book a survey.

Country's images and ranger knowledge are never uploaded to public AI tools, and every dataset is labelled with its site, date and owner.
